Prevent Damage with Hair Sun Protection

Hair sun protection is frequently overlooked. If you are like most people, you spend most of the year looking forward to summer. But your hair may be dreading it. You may love the warm glow that your hair picks up in the summer, but even “natural” lightening from the sun is hard on your hair. Hair that begins with beautiful sunny highlights can end the summer as straw if you do not protect it.

Here are several tips for effective hair sun protection:

* Be careful and moisturize - Pool chemicals or ocean salt can both be very destructive to your hair. The best way to good hair sun protection is constant moisture. Like skin, hair needs a lot of moisture to resist damage. Use a leave-in conditioner or spray your hair with a weak combo of your regular conditioner and water each time you exit the pool or ocean.

* Look out for Octyl Methyoxycinnamate - Generally complicated chemicals are bad news for your hair. But octyl methyoxycinnamate indicates a product has serious SPF power. Also, products that contain the antioxidant vitamins A, E and C will help defend your hair from free radicals. Free radicals are highly charged molecules that can harm cells.

* Cover Up - Creating a physical barrier between the rays of the sun and your hair is the best way to get good hair sun protection. Throw a big beach hat on for a glamorous, fully protected look. This is particularly vital to your hair’s safety between 10 AM and 3 PM when the sun is strongest.

* “Do” Your Hair Right - Putting hair up in a knot or pony tail can protect most of it from sun exposure. Use a dollop of sunscreen to finish off your quick and convenient beach look.

Keep your hair healthy and intact by protecting it from the sun. Hair sun protection keeps your hair healthy and vibrant for fall.
